Do You Need a License to Advertise Health Insurance on Google?

Google still stands as the most dominant search engine, and that likely isn’t changing anytime soon.  For many businesses, using their advertising platform is a big advantage to help attract and convert interested consumers.

For health insurance agents specifically, applying this marketing strategy often leaves the same question up in the air: Do you need a license to advertise health insurance on Google?

To ensure that you get the most out of your advertising campaign while also remaining legally compliant at all times, we’re here to answer this question. Let’s jump in!

The Short Answer is…Yes

In order to advertise the sales of health insurance or insurance related products, you must obtain the proper licensing on behalf of the state you’re advertising in, as well as for Google. Here are the basic requirements:

State Licensing

If your ads are directly related to selling insurance or insurance products, you must hold the proper documentation certifying that you’re either a provider, or are permitted to sell insurance under state/local laws. If you’re unsure about your state’s licensing requirements, check with your state’s insurance department or with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). This documentation is necessary in the Google certification process.

Google’s Health Insurance Advertiser Certification Process

Google requires many financial service and insurance-related businesses to meet specific requirements to run ads on their platform. For health insurance, this involves completing a certification process through third-party vendor G2. Here’s what the process entails:

  • Identifying yourself as a health insurance provider.
  • Certifying that you are legally allowed to promote and sell health insurance under state and/or local laws
  • Confirming if you are registered with the United States governments to promote and sell Affordable Care Act-compliant health plans.

It’s important to note that this certification must be completed for each state in which you are licensed in and would like to advertise. The certification costs a fee which varies depending on the number of states in which you’re applying for.

Lastly, to make this process as smooth as possible, you’ll want to have your general business information, state insurance license(s), and proof of ACA qualification (if applicable), on hand.

To apply for your certification or to learn more about the requirements, visit the G2 website.

In the health insurance space, basically any individual or business advertising health insurance or health insurance products must apply for the G2 certification. If you are one of the following, be sure to get your documents in order and start the process, if you’re not already certified:

Why Licensing Matters for Google Advertisements

Having the proper certifications and licensing has a number of benefits, from both a legal and business standpoint:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Obtaining a license guarantees that you are in compliance with the law when it comes to discussing, promoting, or advertising insurance products or services. Without the proper licensing you may be subject to disapproved ads, fines, or other legal action.
  • Credibility and Trust: When you or your agency is properly licensed, your ads gain more credibility. This in turn boosts consumer confidence and trust
  • Google’s Advertising Guidelines: These guidelines are designed to shield consumers from deceptive or fraudulent financial services. Proof of validity, including a license, is necessary to comply with their rules.
  • Increased Ad Approval Rates: Google is more likely to approve ads from certified agencies or licensed insurance agents.
  • Increased Conversion Rates: Advertisements from qualified professionals are more likely to be trusted and interacted with by consumers.

Mistakes to Avoid When Advertising on Google

  • Overlooking Google’s G2 Certification Requirements: While most agents know about their state and local licensing requirements, the G2 certification must also be completed in order to legally advertise on their platform.
  • Ignoring State Laws: On the other hand, since insurance is regulated on a state level, it’s necessary to have your licensing together for that state(s) in which you operate. Keep in mind that insurance laws vary widely from state to state, and without proof of your state license, you won’t be able to obtain the G2 certification.
  • Misleading Ad Copy: Google is strict about misleading or deceptive ad copy, especially when it comes to industries like health insurance or finance. To ensure compliance, it’s important to have a firm understanding of Google’s specific policies, to avoid ad disapprovals or other penalties. For more information, check out the Google Ads Policy Center, and view the “Misrepresentation” and “Healthcare and Medicines” sections.

To be successful in the health insurance space, you must attract interested consumers, and what better way to do that than by utilizing Google’s advertising platform. But wait, there’s a catch… in order to be successful, you MUST be compliant, and it’s pretty straightforward.

It all boils down to having the proper state insurance license, and completing your G2 certification. Doing so not only keeps you legally compliant, but it also improves your ad approval rate, and your credibility.
